A restless man
In the quiet village of Megalohori, an active tomato producer stirs steaming pots that give out tempting aromas. It is Petros Oikonomou preparing the tomato paste, supervising the cherry tomatoes resting in the sun and checking the amount of sugar in the spoonsweet. He first came to Santorini on vacations in 1979. In 1987 he opened up his own restaurant in Kamari. However, the landmark in his career has been his occupation with the biological cultivation of the Santorini cherry tomato. Petros Oikonomou started experimenting with the specific cultivation in 1997, resulting in the successful production of the famous Anydro labelled products. His first awarding came in 2000 and since then he has never stopped collecting awards and making tributes in magazines and newspapers. “I have never treated any of my occupations with strict professionalism, but mainly with love and vision” he admits. Today he teaches at the Vocational Lyceum of Fira conveying his love for the land to his students; they are about to start cultivating oregano, thyme, rosemary and sage.
